2010 AIA National Grassroots Excellence Award

On Feb. 5, 2010, during the AIA Grassroots Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., AIA Colorado South was presented with an AIA National Grassroots Excellence Award in the "Increasing Organizational Performance” category. AIA Colorado South 2010 President Bill Fisher, AIA, and 2010 Past President RJ Steer, AIA, were on hand to accept the award on behalf of the chapter.

The AIA Colorado South 2009 Programs Committee, comprised of Steer, Brian King, AIA, and Marvin Maples, AIA, was selected for this prestigious award for its efforts in putting together a series of extraordinarily low-cost education programs for the membership in 2009, and for improving the level of service offered to members through programs.

In 2009, AIA Colorado South was able to offer 21.5 health, safety and welfare credits, including 8.0 sustainable design credits. This was more than a six-fold increase in the number of credits offered from 2008. Nearly all of the 2009 programs were free, resulting in an average cost per credit for members of only $2.56. Considering the new state mandatory continuing education requirement last year, and considering the incredibly tough economy, the programs committee, with the support of the board of the directors and the staff, provided significant value and an important service to the membership.

The awards jury stated: "The committee is being recognized because they learned how to get the most out of their membership: by being active, volunteering their energy and enthusiasm, and helping other members do the same. Especially in the current economic climate, this type of member activity is invaluable. As a result, they have been able to influence positive decisions that have made a significant impact upon the profession.”
