During this event, Narcissus Quagliata will present his public projects which are installed in three continents, including the Dome of Light in Taiwan, the largest glass illuminated dome in the world, and Divinity of Light, a modern project installed on Michelangelo's last Basilica in Rome. He will also discuss the significance of light as a medium in today's environment, as well as present his work on the figure as a symbol that mirrors the human soul.

This class covers the provisions of the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. Both commercial and residential plan review and inspection techniques will be reviewed. Discussion will include climate zones, thermal envelope, air barriers, vapor barriers, mechanical systems, lighting controls and loads as well as determining lighting budgets. This class is a combination of the half-day Residential and Commercial Energy Conservation classes.

Butterflies, some of nature’s most beautiful and intriguing creatures, symbolize change and movement. The architecture firm June14 Meyer-Grohbrügge&Chermayeff brings these creatures to the 16th Street Mall, a bustling, vibrant, and ever-changing place. Butterflies will be placed in netted enclosures along the Mall, changing the experience the public has there. Come see and celebrate the butterflies and look at downtown Denver in a new way. 

Architects Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen (Chile) address the concept of distance – both actual and perceptual – within our urban fabric, by creating a pedestrian friendly structure that bridges downtown Denver and the Auraria Campus. A wooden structure standing 50ft high, 50ft long and 10ft wide, Mine Pavilion pays homage to Colorado’s rich mining history and welcomes all to come explore.

A lightweight cloud-like canopy envelops the underutilized Skyline Park in the form of Skyline Cloud, a series of 11ft high semi-portable modules. Designed by architects Felipe and Federico Mesa (Colombia), this installation provides shade where before there was none, creating an inviting public gathering space.

What might Denver’s skyline look like as the city changes and evolves? The Hotel Rehearsal, designed by artist and architect Alex Schweder, looks at the changing city space through the usage of surface parking lots. In various parking lots downtown, an inflatable hotel room will lift in and out of a van via a scissor lift. When extended to its maximum height, the room provides the view you might one day have from a hotel room on this site -acknowledging that what is now a parking lot will one day be something new. When the room is lowered into the space of the van, the van moves throughout the parking lot as it normally would, staying true to the way the site is currently used.

As part of the Biennial of the Americas, artists and architects from across the Americas come together to explore the continually evolving relationship between Denver and its people - and the profound affect one has on the other. Four large-scale installations, temporarily erected throughout downtown Denver, creatively address a specific city planning challenge while simultaneously encouraging public interaction. Artists will also be invited to transform billboards and other urban signage in an experiment of turning the expected into anything but. An exhibition at the McNichols Building features local artists, providing a chance for the public to learn more about the artistic process. The end result is a living, breathing urban museum easily accessible by foot and available for all to enjoy. Everything surrounding us has been previously drafted, prototyped and recreated before arriving at its current state. The First Draft exhibition at the McNichols building illustrates the concept of processes or the evolution of ideas. Comprised of local artists living and working in the Denver-Metro area, First Draft explores change and the ways it entwines in our lives through artistic processes.

Regulations and national "best practice” recommendations on energy efficiency sometimes introduce misleading decision-making signals by discounting sound architectural decisions and over-rewarding engineering solutions. Models may be used throughout design to measure performance potential and manage expectations from pre-design through post-occupancy. Pre-design models help inform building architectural design, however reality gaps between standards-based solutions and actual projects exist.

Architectural design outperformed standards, but were not equally "rewarded” by the system in the six case studies in this presentation. Current requirements for establishing code baselines do not adequately address early design decisions such as building massing and glazing design. This presentation summarizes cases where the best early architectural design alternatives for reducing carbon emissions were rewarded less by current modeling protocols in Appendix G to ASHRAE 90.1 than their alternative designs. These models can then be sequenced into continuously-improving models to measure performance potential and manage expectations from pre-design through post-occupancy.

This class explores the major provisions of the 2012 International Building Code. The presentation includes discussions of the provisions addressing the following issues: occupancy classification, types of construction, means of egress, fire sprinklers and fire-resistive-rated construction, administrative provisions and accessibility. This class is designed to provide an introduction to the new provision of the code.

Join AIA Colorado West (Aspen) on Thursday, July 25, from 8 a.m. - noon, for Accessibility Overview. The program will be held at Colorado Mountain College in the Art Gallery, Room 126 (0255 Sage Way, Aspen, CO 81611).

This code class provides an overview of the scoping provisions for accessibility in the International Building Code and the technical provisions of the ICC/ANSI A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. The seminar will also discuss differences between the provisions enforced by building department and the American Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.

Equip Yourself ? What is BIM?
Presenters: Ruby Siddiqui, Assoc. AIA, NOMA, of Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc.

This presentation will define BIM and highlight the differences between "Little BIM” and "Big BIM.” It will also explore what tools are available to create a BIM and what the advantages are of utilizing IFC technology in an Open BIM workflow.

Where am I on the BIM Path?
Presenter: Steve Alden, AIA, of Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc.
Duration: 30 Minutes
This presentation will examine how BIM fits into traditional design workflows. It explores several design-oriented architectural firms and examines their unique implementations of BIM processes. Firms discussed will include HKS (Atlanta, GA), Cearnal Andrulaitis Architecture and Interior Design (Santa Barbara, CA), MulvannyG2 Architecture (Bellevue, WA) and Division1 (Washington, DC). The presentation will highlight the use of BIM technology as an adaptive tool capable of supporting flexible workflows.

Small Green BIM
Presenter: François Lévy, AIA, AIAA, and Author of BIM in Small-Scale Sustainable Design
Duration: 60 Minutes
This presentation will discuss the dominant influence of climate on the design of smaller projects and the quantitative design opportunities BIM offers for sustainability. Identify the BIM workflow’s applicability to skin-load dominated projects and discuss specific element modeling strategies in a BIM-authoring application to optimize the early design of high-performance buildings.

The advent of BIM technology promises to improve the overall design process for construction projects, and is likely to become the dominant system for project design delivery. This presentation outlines the potential liabilities firms should consider when utilizing this cutting-edge technology on its projects. Issues to be discussed include copyright ownership, information management and control, licensing issues and more.

Site Planning Workflows with BIM
Presenter: Eric Gilbey, RLA, ASLA, Prof. Mem. APLD of Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc.
Duration: 30 Minutes
This presentation will communicate the benefits and challenges of integrating BIM software into a landscape architecture studio. It will demonstrate how to integrate Site Information Modeling (SIM) functionality into BIM workflows for site-specific projects and collaborate with clients using Open BIM workflows.

Plugging Structural Analysis and Design into the BIM Workflow
Presenter: Dan Monaghan of Nemetschek Scia
Duration: 20 Minutes
This presentation will explore BIM from the point of view of the structural engineer. Through an example building-based project, we'll highlight the benefits and considerations of working in a collaborative, model-based workflow. We'll demonstrate advantages of Open BIM and Industry Foundation Class (IFC) model exchanges. We look at how BIM models from architects can be leveraged into analysis, and how optimized structural models can be passed back for reference and model coordination.

Big BIM: Description and Case Study
Presenters: Wes Gardner, Assoc. AIA, of Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc.
Duration: 30 Minutes
This presentation outlines how organizations develop IFC-based standards to achieve streamlined workflows. Various file-sharing methods such as the BIM Server, Peer-to-Peer and Reference Model workflows are presented in conjunction with the roll of the BIM Manager. The presentation concludes with a case study proving the concept of BIM interoperability.

Join AIA Colorado West (Durango) on Friday, July 26, from 1 – 5 p.m., for Advanced Means of Egress. The program will be held at the Durango Discovery Museum in the Boiler Room Theater (1333 Camino Del Rio, Durango, CO 81301)

This class provides an advanced look at the means of egress requirements included in Chapter 10 of the International Building Code. The presentation will include detailed discussions on the design and review of the means of egress in unusual occupancies. Subjects included in the class are malls, assembly occupancies, special egress components, smoke proof enclosures, horizontal exits and exit passageways. Practical examples will be used to illustrate code requirements. This class is designed for those students that have a basic understanding of how the means of egress is designed and reviewed.

The class qualifies for 4.0 AIA HSW continuing education learning units (LU). Under the state of Colorado's rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program should meet the requirements for 7.5 HSW CEH.

an exterior courtyard that serves as the confluence of the

Join the AIA Colorado Building Enclosure Council (BEC) for the BEC Fall Seminar: Red Hot Skins - Crafting the Thermal Envelope, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 1 – 5 p.m., at the PPA Event Center (2105 Decatur St., Denver, CO 80211).
