Create Denver Opens - CITY BEAUTIFUL 2.0
Coworking space and installation runs May 10 - June 23, 3rd floor of the McNichols Building. Building hours are Thurs - Sun, 10am -5pm
CLOSING PARTY: FRIDAY JUNE 21st (Solstice)
2pm - 10pm in Civic Center Park
5pm - 9pm McNichols Building 3rd Floor
Create Denver celebrates the solstice and City Beautiful 2.0 by calling the public to come play in the park (bring your bikes, kick balls, yoga mats and picnics), ending the night with a 3-D video and architectural mapping display by Legwork Studio & Ceavco Audio Visual on the back of the McNichols Civic Center Building.
City Beautiful 2.0 celebrates the civic and community engagement ideals of Robert Speer’s City Beautiful movement by designing the McNichols Civic Center Building 3rd floor as a creative installation space and flexible coworking destination. Experiments in the use of space and exploration of citizen participation will generate ideas for future integration of the building within its surrounding built environment.
This purposeful installation seeks to express three key components of Create Denver’s economic development strategy:
1. Creative sector engagement: Coworking, incubation and activation
2. Placemaking: Vibrancy and ownership through a modern interpretation of how we work, play and live
3. The McNichols Building: What it is and why it is important
ABOUT CREATE DENVER
Create Denver, an initiative of Denver Arts & Venues, strengthens the overall health and vitality of Denver by supporting the growth and development of the Creative Sector, including artists and enterprises such as film, architecture, music, fine art, galleries, art districts, fashion and design.
Create Denver provides a series of programs and happenings that showcases Denver’s talented and dynamic creative community, recognizes the creative sector for making Denver vibrant and economically vital, catalyzes the community to become a cohesive collective, and supports the creative community by providing educational programming, inspirational dialogue, placemaking and ideation.

What might Denver’s skyline look like as the city changes and evolves? The Hotel Rehearsal, designed by artist and architect Alex Schweder, looks at the changing city space through the usage of surface parking lots. In various parking lots downtown, an inflatable hotel room will lift in and out of a van via a scissor lift. When extended to its maximum height, the room provides the view you might one day have from a hotel room on this site -acknowledging that what is now a parking lot will one day be something new. When the room is lowered into the space of the van, the van moves throughout the parking lot as it normally would, staying true to the way the site is currently used.

As part of the Biennial of the Americas, artists and architects from across the Americas come together to explore the continually evolving relationship between Denver and its people - and the profound affect one has on the other. Four large-scale installations, temporarily erected throughout downtown Denver, creatively address a specific city planning challenge while simultaneously encouraging public interaction. Artists will also be invited to transform billboards and other urban signage in an experiment of turning the expected into anything but. An exhibition at the McNichols Building features local artists, providing a chance for the public to learn more about the artistic process. The end result is a living, breathing urban museum easily accessible by foot and available for all to enjoy. For more information on the specific installations, please visit biennialoftheamericas.org/art-projects.php

Join AIA Denver on Tuesday, July 16, from noon – 1 p.m., for Minding the Gap – From Sustainable Policy to Practice, an Eat and Educate presented by The Weidt Group.
Please note the new location: The program will be held at the AIA Colorado Office Building in the First Floor Conference Room (303 E. 17th Ave., Denver, CO 80203).
Attendees can earn 1.0 AIA HSW continuing education learning unit (LU). Under the state of Colorado’s rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program should meet the requirements for 1.0 HSW CEH.
Regulations and national "best practice” recommendations on energy efficiency sometimes introduce misleading decision-making signals by discounting sound architectural decisions and over-rewarding engineering solutions. Models may be used throughout design to measure performance potential and manage expectations from pre-design through post-occupancy. Pre-design models help inform building architectural design, however reality gaps between standards-based solutions and actual projects exist.
Architectural design outperformed standards, but were not equally "rewarded” by the system in the six case studies in this presentation. Current requirements for establishing code baselines do not adequately address early design decisions such as building massing and glazing design. This presentation summarizes cases where the best early architectural design alternatives for reducing carbon emissions were rewarded less by current modeling protocols in Appendix G to ASHRAE 90.1 than their alternative designs. These models can then be sequenced into continuously-improving models to measure performance potential and manage expectations from pre-design through post-occupancy.
This program is free for all AIA Denver members and lunch will be provided by The Weidt Group.
RSVPs are required for admittance into the meeting, and must be made by Friday, July 12, at noon. Contact Jenna Cather at jenna@aiacolorado.org to reserve your spot today.
