The Direct Design seminar is based on The Masonry Society's new Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures. This new standard provides a direct design procedure that provides a step-by-step process using a series of tables to design and specify relatively simple, single story concrete masonry bearing wall structures in compliance with the 2008 MSJC Code and Specification as well the 2009 International Building Code. Since flashing is usually hidden, it is sometimes substituted or deleted. This can be a HUGE mistake. Although flashing is not a masonry material itself, it is the critical piece that makes the rest of your detail work. This seminar will help you compare different flashing materials (for cost as well as effectiveness). The class will also teach you where to put the flashing and how to install it so that it will work. Taught by Diane Travis at Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute, 686 Mariposa St, Denver.

This training course is designed to show students the process of how to go from a sketch or CAD file to a final professional quality architectural visualization.

The AIA Colorado North Third Annual Bowling Tournament will be held on Friday, June 15, from 4 – 7 p.m., at Centennial Lanes (110 E. 9th Ave., Longmont, CO 80501). The tournament is open to all levels of players and will consist of three rounds of bowling which will be explained in more detail at the tournament. This class covers the provisions of the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. Both commercial and residential plan review and inspection techniques will be reviewed. Discussion will include climate zones, thermal envelope, air barriers, vapor barriers, mechanical systems, lighting controls and loads as well as determining lighting budgets. On July 24th, join our Building America Standing Technical Committee (STC) meetings to weigh in on current and future research priorities. On July 25th and 26th, the meeting will follow a dynamic new format, bringing together researchers from Building America teams and national laboratories in a panel discussion. These sessions will focus on addressing issues that must be resolved to deliver solutions that reduce whole-house energy use in new and existing homes by 30%-50%.

This meeting is targeted to researchers, architects, contractors,manufacturers, builders, utilities, legislators, lenders, realtors, auditors,raters, installation technicians, HOA representatives, and anyone else interested in improving energy efficiency in both new and existing residential buildings. For many years the construction industry has followed OSHA requirements that dictated masonry walls over eight feet tall must be "adequately” braced. But what exactly is "adequate” for bracing masonry walls, and what are the most effective approaches for the typical job site? Although building codes are getting more and more restrictive in their insulation requirements, you can build a single-wythe concrete block building in most climate zones and still meet the Inernational Energy Conservation Code if you know what to specify. This seminar will teach you what you have to include in your design to make it meet today's energy codes. It will also cover detailing advice you need to know to make sure your building will be trouble-free for decades. Taught by Jacob Wipf at Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute, 686 Mariposa St, Denver.

This class addresses the use of the International Existing Building Code. It focuses on the fundamental requirements of IEBC that are placed on an existing structure that undergoes repair work, alteration, renovation activity or construction of an addition, and the effect of a change in the building’s occupancy classification. The class discusses the prescriptive requirements, work area requirements and compliance alternatives method of evaluating work in an existing building. Topics include regulations of additions, alterations and repairs, changes of occupancy considerations, compliance alternatives and application of the IEBC.
