David Adjaye Lecture at CU Denver
Monday, April 21, 2014 6:00:00 PM

The CU Denver College of Architecture and Planning and AIA Denver excited to announce David Adjaye, architect of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver), will present as part of the college’s lecture series.

Adjaye’s lecture on his current works on Monday, April 21, will be at 6:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. Space is limited to the first 300 people, so arrive early or risk being turned away.

David Adjaye, OBE, Principal Architect of Adjaye Associates, is described as an architect with an artist’s sensibility. His ingenious use of materials and showcasing of light have defined his work since establishing his practice in 2000. He was born in Tanzania in 1966 and lived in a number of different cities across Africa until settling in London at the age of 13. After gaining a B.Arch. from London South Bank University, Adjaye graduated with a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Royal College of Art in 1993, where he won the RIBA Bronze Medal.

Projects have been diverse in scale, audience, and geography. They include numerous private houses, exhibitions and pavilions as well as major arts centres and important public buildings. Among the completed civic works are: the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver; two neighborhood libraries in Washington, D.C.; Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO; and the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo. His largest commission is the project to design the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum for African American History and Culture on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., now under construction. Also on site is the Sugar Hill social housing scheme in New York’s Harlem, a mixed-use retail and arts complex in Beirut, Lebanon and a concept store in Lagos, Nigeria. In the UK, he is working on a new ‘fashion hub’ in Hackney, London. Projects in Ghana include the five-star Princes Town Resort, Elmina College and Roman Ridge Gardens residential development.

Adjaye’s commitment to education extends to lecturing internationally; he was the first Louis Kahn visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and was the Kenzo Tange Professor in Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He also has taught at the Architectural Association, the Royal College of Art and Princeton University School of Architecture. Adjaye is a RIBA Chartered Member, an AIA Honorary Fellow, a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded the OBE for services to architecture in 2007 and received the Design Miami/ Year of the Artist title in 2011. In 2012 he reached number one on the Guardian’s "Powerlist” of Britain’s most influential black people.

The lecture is presented in partnership with the AIA Denver Committee on the Environment (COTE).

Increasing Window to Wall Ratio Without Energy Penalty
Thursday, May 01, 2014 3:30:00 PM
Increasing window to wall ratio without energy penalty

To increase building energy performance, building codes are restricting the allowable window area. However, windows can be an energy positive if used as part of an integrated façade. Optimizing natural daylight to offset using electric lighting energy saves energy at building and national levels and improves the quality of the built environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize the role of daylighting, and describe its challenges for use in sustainable design
  • Describe active and passive dynamic glazing systems
  • List the four components that make up an electrochromic control system
  • Describe three different methods of electrochromic glazing control and a building user situation applicable to each

Andrew Hulse, SAGE Electrochromics

Hotel de Paris Museum 2014 Tour Season
Saturday, May 24, 2014 10:00:00 AM

Hotel de Paris Museum, a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, opens its tour season to the public on Saturday, May 24. Louis Dupuy’s legendary Hotel de Paris dates to the silver mining boom, when it served as a first-class French restaurant, showroom for traveling salesmen, and luxurious accommodation during the Gilded Age. This year, the museum will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

To celebrate the site’s Diamond anniversary, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has proclaimed May 24 Hotel de Paris Museum Day. The historic site’s staff will read the proclamation from the steps of the historic site to open the tour season. On site tours, the public will be able to see the impressive cumulative results of six decades of restoration and preservation work undertaken by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) in the State of Colorado. In this time, the NSCDA in CO has collected, preserved, and shared history associated with Hotel de Paris. The organization’s commitment to the site has resulted in the preservation of rare manuscripts, traditions, relics, and mementos of bygone days.

Visitors can imagine the daily activities of the hotel when they closely inspect a significant collection of objects from the hotel’s past in 7,000 square feet of restored period rooms. A dining room, kitchen, library, salesmen’s rooms, private quarters, guest rooms, and wine cellar are maintained as they would have been in the hotel’s heyday. Visitors will see for themselves faithful arrangements of historic artifacts that accurately and honestly tell the life stories of the hotel’s proprietors, staff, and guests through architecture, furniture, photography, statuary, oil paintings, etchings, lithographs, books, maps, decorative arts, and culinary items.

The site is open daily from May 24-September 30, and on weekends from October 1-December 14. General admission is $5; discounts are available for youth, seniors, active military, and members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Hotel de Paris Museum is located at 409 6th

Street, Georgetown, CO, 80444. The museum shop offers cookbooks, aprons, sachets, soaps and more. Free public parking is located next to the museum.
