Placemaking: Joint Lecture by Tony Atkin, FAIA, and Laurie Olin

Tony Atkin FAIA, design principal of Atkin Olshin Schade Architects of Philadelphia and Santa Fe, and Laurie Olin, principal of the landscape architecture firm, OLIN, will speak on "Placemaking" at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 in the Celeste Theater of the Cornerstone Arts Center on the campus of Colorado College. Their two firms are currently engaged in updating the Colorado College Master Plan.

People who experience Tony Atkin's work describe a spirit of place with a human scale and buildings where art engages intellect. His work ranges geographically from an eco-hotel in China, to academic buildings in New England, to pueblos in the Southwest. His planning work in the region includes not only Colorado College, but also Cherokee Castle south of Denver as well as the Zuni and Acoma Pueblos. The firm's preservation plan for Ohkay Owingeh, "Place of the Strong People,” the largest of the Tewa pueblos, has received numerous awards including the Environmental Design Research Association, Research Award in 2012 and the American Planning Association HUD Secretary's Opportunity and Empowerment Award in 2013. In addition to his professional work, Tony Atkin is adjunct associate professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He was co-editor (with Joseph Rykwert) of the book Structure and Meaning in Human Settlements.

Laurie Olin is one of the most influential landscape architects in the country, responsible for numerous projects including Bryant Park in New York, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC and the LDS Conference Center roof garden in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of several books including Across the Open Field and Transforming the Commonplace. He and his firm have received numerous awards, including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture. In 2013 he was presented with the prestigious National Medal of Arts by President Obama.

Join us November 19, as we welcome Dan Pitera, the Executive Director of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center in Detroit, Michigan. He will be talking about their new book, Syncopating the Urban Landscape: More People, More Programs, More Geographies. Syncopating the Urban Landscape looks in a creative way at the City of Detroit through the work of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture.

The Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC) is a multidisciplinary, nonprofit architecture and urban design firm at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture dedicated to creating sustainable spaces and communities through quality design and the collaborative process.

• a participatory approach to architectural, urban, and graphic design;

AIA Colorado Code Class: 2012 International Building Code Overview

Join AIA Colorado on Friday, Nov. 21, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., for 2012 International Building Code Overview. The program will be held at the PPA Event Center (2105 Decatur St., Denver, CO 80211).

This class explores the major provisions of the 2012 International Building Code. The presentation includes discussions of the provisions addressing the following issues: occupancy classification, types of construction, means of egress, fire sprinklers and fire-resistive-rated construction, administrative provisions and accessibility. This class is designed to provide an introduction to the new provision of the code.

The class qualifies for 7.5 AIA HSW continuing education learning units (LU). Under the state of Colorado’s rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program should meet the requirements for 7.5 HSW CEH.

The deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 14, at noon. The class is $125 for members and $225 for nonmembers to attend. Register online or download the registration form.
