AIA Colorado West (Aspen) CE Seminar: Skins
Friday, August 22, 2014 1:00:00 PM

AIA Colorado West invites all of its members to attend a seminar about façades presented by Studio NYL|The SKINS Group. This program will take place on Friday, Aug. 22, from 1 - 4 p.m., at Colorado Mountain College in the Art Gallery, Room 126 (0255 Sage Way, Aspen, CO 81611) preceding the gala.

Here's a sneak peek at what you'll be learning!

High-Performance Façades – Deviation from the Norm
This presentation will explore the multiple stakeholders and variables affecting achievement of high-performance envelopes. The discussion will cover various conventional and emerging materials and assemblies. Moreover, the conversation will also speak to how the appropriateness of such assemblies are evaluated and implemented towards the goal of creating a high-performance façade.

God is in the DETAILS: A Detailed Case Study Review of Non-Traditional Facade Detailing
The session is a case study driven review of facade details and will review the atypical conditions that do not occur in the idealized conditions. The course is crucial to those designing the enclosure of buildings that do not fit the mold of a common box. The case studies will include both transparent and opaque facade systems and the junction of the transparent and opaque assemblies, where most facade failures occur. Important topics will include continuous insulation, mitigation of thermal bridges, condensation, waterproofing and structure.

Attendees will receive 3.0 HSW AIA continuing education learning units (LU). Under the state of Colorado's rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program should meet the requirements for 3.0 HSW CEH.

The seminar is $25 for members to attend and $45 for non-members to attend.

Register online by 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15.

Universal Design/Build
Wednesday, August 27, 2014 8:00:00 AM
Universal Design/Build presents a shift in the approach to residential design and construction. Comfort and convenience regardless of age, stature or ability is the hallmark of inclusive design. Designers suppliers, builders, remodelers, social and health service providers will benefit from the creative design concepts and practices presented to develop market-driven projects that have broad aesthetic appeal as well as the necessary functional attributes. Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) courses are not a pre-requisite and CAPS will find benefit by expanding into the broader spectrum of universal design that offers a much wider target audience. As a graduate of this course, you will be able to:
  • Describe the significance of integrating UD concepts in residential construction
  • Distinguish between accessibility solutions and UD solutions
  • Describe ways that design can be both functional and attractive
  • Identify and implement solutions for simple and complex scenarios that address various household compositions, budgets and changing needs of clients
  • Use effective marketing and communication strategies throughout the process
  • Locate resources, products, materials and services
While CAPS I and CAPS II are not prerequisites for this course, it is helpful if students have taken the courses sequentially.
The Universal Design/Build course counts as 12 CE hours for the following designations: CAPS, CGA, CGB, CGP, CGR, GMB, GMR, and Master CGP. It also counts as 6 CE hours for the CMP, CSP, Master CSP, and MIRM designations.

ASHRAE 90.1 2007 vs 2010
Wednesday, September 03, 2014 3:30:00 PM

ASHRAE 90.1 2007 vs 2010

The imminent launch of LEED V 4 will bring a infrequently-used energy standard to the forefront, ASHRAE 90.1-2010. What's the big deal about this? This session will delve into the details of the differences between ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and ASHRAE 90.1-2010. It will also provide the differences in savings between these two standards through the use of case studies.

Learning Objectives:

Compare ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and ASHRAE 90.1-2010 to understand the differences between the two standards with respect to envelope, HVAC, and lighting considerations

Describe the impact on energy savings when using ASHRAE 90.1-2010 as a baseline instead of ASHRAE 90.1-2007

Identify the differing energy savings impacts between varying building types, through the use of case studies, for application in building design

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join a revamped Membership Task Force in an effort to brainstorm, research and implement a meaningful benefits package for all AIA Colorado members. We want people to think outside the box. What can we do to recruit new members, retain current members and help architects choose the AIA over the many other organizations they could join? This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of AIA Colorado and make AIA the most important resource that builds better architects. Our next meeting will take place on Monday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m., at the AIA Colorado office. Can't make it in person? Join via video conference.
