By Daniel Nelson, AIA, Associate at Tryba and Chair of the 2020 AIA Colorado Awards Committee
The 2020 Awards Committee has already hit the ground running to plan the best way to honor and recognize excellence in the architecture community. New this year–this committee is working to determine categories and criteria for both the Design and Honor Awards. (In the past, the two were handled separately and this committee was responsible for Design Awards, while previous Honor Award recipients handled the Honor Awards).
So far this year:
- We have a thoughtful and ambitious group serving on the 2020 Design & Honor Awards Committee. Our seven members provide a diversity of opinions and perspectives relative to Colorado architecture and the awards process.
- We are not pursuing significant changes to the awards categories this year, but are instead working to improve the system that is currently in place. We hope this will make it easier for members to submit (without having to learn a whole new process and structure of categories).
- Thus far, our primary focus has been on strengthening the role of sustainability in the awards. We hope to better feature sustainable design principles throughout the awards, but without overshadowing the focus on general design excellence. We are currently working through the addition of a Sustainable Design award category that will feature those projects that exemplify excellence specifically in sustainable design.
- We are also reviewing the Honor Awards process, in conjunction with the Equity, Diversity & Inclusiveness Committee to ensure that our commitment to equity in the profession is reflected in the awards.
