The 2020 Awards Committee is proud to include a brand new Sustainable Design category as a part of the 2020 Design Awards. Our goal for the award is to celebrate projects that strive for excellence in design and sustainability, creating a more beautiful and healthier world to live in. The diverse background of the committee members brought together examples of sustainability awards criteria from AIA chapters across the country. These helped us decide the best way to collect and review sustainability information for submitted projects.

After reviewing other chapter’s sustainability awards, we decided to adapt a form for Colorado called the ‘Design Excellence Common App’, developed by AIA San Antonio. The Common App follows the 10 measures from the AIA National COTE Top Ten Awards and can act as a starter for projects to submit to this National AIA award. The form we selected was modified for Colorado, but is in use at many AIA chapters around the country – the creators are hoping it will become adopted by chapters nationwide. The sustainability form is optional for all projects, and the online submission form allows projects to choose if they would like to be considered for the Sustainability category as well. We know Colorado firms do amazing design work and we are thrilled this year to highlight the sustainability efforts behind our great designs.
