By Phil Gerou, FAIA, Fellows Nominating Committee Chair
Each year, the AIA Colorado Fellows Nominating Committee seeks recommendations for potential candidates to consider for advancement to Fellowship. The goals of the Nominating Committee are to identify candidates deserving of the advancement to the College of Fellows and to nominate those candidates who would receive serious consideration for advancement by the AIA National Jury of Fellows. The committee also assists nominees with their submittals. During the 100 years before the committee was established in 1993, Colorado had a total of 32 Fellows. In the 24 years since then, Colorado has had an additional 69 Fellows recognized.
Each year in early February, we present a Demystifying Fellowship program for all interested members; those who are currently considering Fellowship or any member interested in finding out more about the qualifications and process.
Recognition of achievements and elevation to Fellowship is the highest honor the AIA can bestow on a member, short of the Gold Medal. But for those Fellows here in Colorado, it is also a call for mentorship and continued engagement. The AIA Colorado Fellows’ Scholarship Fund was established with the goal of creating a $100,000 fund to endow an annual “recruiting scholarship” of $5,000 for a University of Colorado student. We are currently 60% of the way toward our ultimate goal.
At AIA Colorado’s annual “Milestone Reception,” which honors newly licensed architects, the Colorado Fellows present a copy of the 210-page Colorado Fellows Book to each new architectural licensee. The Colorado Fellows Book, published in 2008, also offers 36 essays from our local Fellows on their inspirations, careers and aspirations. Copies are available at the AIA office with proceeds benefiting the Fellows Scholarship Fund.Additionally, we are currently working with History Colorado to archive videos of AIA Colorado Fellows and seasoned professionals.
The Nominating Committee, and by extension, the College of Fellows, will continue to elevate our most distinguished members and serve all AIA members.
