Denver, February 23, 2018—The 2018 American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Jury of Fellows has elevated 152 architects across the U.S. to the College of Fellows, four of which are from Colorado.

Fellowship is the highest honor an AIA member can achieve after having made significant contributions to the profession of architecture.

The 2018 AIA fellows from Colorado are:

  • Stuart L. Coppedge, FAIA, principal of RTA Architects in Colorado Springs
  • Frederick (Rick) H. Petersen, FAIA, partner at OZ Architecture in Denver
  • Tania Salgado, FAIA, principal of Handprint Architecture in Denver
  • Christopher N. Shears, FAIA, Principal of Shears Adkins Rockmore Architects in Denver

The rigorous requirements result in only 3% of AIA members being elevated to fellow, which means there are 3,425 living fellows globally. The percentage is similar in Colorado—just under 3% of AIA Colorado members are fellows, resulting in 71 total.

“This distinction symbolizes excellence in architecture and a longstanding commitment to advancing the profession,” said Cathy Rosset, Executive Vice President and CEO of AIA Colorado. “The impact of the four newly-elevated fellows in Colorado is obvious, and they are incredibly deserving of the recognition.”

Candidates must have been AIA members for at least 10 years and have demonstrated influence in at least one of the following categories:

  • Promoted the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession;
  • Advanced the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training or practice;
  • Coordinated the building industry and the profession of architecture through leadership in the AIA or other related professional organizations; or
  • Advanced the living standards of people through an improved environment.
