Glazing and curtainwall systems continue to evolve as buildings need higher performance levels while maintaining high transparency levels—early constraints were simply watertight and transparent.
In this AIA Colorado webinar, we will discuss how buildings today demand lower U values, bird-safing, and lower embodied carbon while providing the natural light and connection to the outdoors—on budget. Case studies will show alternatives to the store aluminum curtainwall systems that have become the standard. We’ll learn about the design of long-span, triple-glazed curtainwall systems, including the COTE Top 10 winning Amherst Science Building, mullionless glass systems with spans ranging from 12 to 24 feet, both in and out of Colorado, and the insulated glass cable wall system at 16 Chestnut in Denver.
We will also address the availability and challenges of oversized glass systems, bird safing, and new technologies that will be entering the market for better thermal performance. Specifically, in this session, attendees will:
- be able to design, develop, and specify base fixed mullionless glazing systems and discuss the detailing and installation challenges while maintaining a thermally broken system.
- be able to implement strategies utilizing alternate mullion systems to develop long span systems, specify lower embodied carbon mullion materials while maintaining a high performance thermally broken glazing system.
- be able to design and specify cable support insulated glazing systems and understand the challenges of maintaining the weather seals while managing deflection and the anchorage to the primary structure.
- be able to detail the edge transitions of custom glazing systems to provide thermal separation with slender structural elements.
This session will be presented by Christopher O’Hara, PE, SECB, and Will Babbington, AIA, PE, LEED AP BD+C, both with Studio NYL. Attendance is complimentary for AIA Colorado members with registration below.
