Generating Visions: The Technical Moves Behind High Performance Aspirational Architecture

Generate: (v) cause, to arise or come about. Generating vision will be about the technical ingenuity to achieve some of the most visionary designs of the past year. The presentation will include case studies of projects completed in 2023 and 2024 by 3 of America’s best architects including 2 AIA National Firms of the Year (Snow Kreilich and Payette) and AIA Gold Medal Winner Marlon Blackwell. Will and Chris will discuss Studio NYL’s collaboration with these incredible architects with the technical details that enable the facades and structures to become a reality. These diverse and unique projects include modularity, long span glazing systems, mass timber and many unique strategies for achieving higher performance envelopes with a focus on thermal breaks. The discussion will be case study driven and focused no the critical details and systems that make these recently completed designs come to life.

All-Electric and Net Zero Energy Buildings: Examples and Lessons Learned

Three design-team members explain why they focus on all-electric and Net Zero Energy buildings. An architect, mechanical engineer, and energy modeler share their perspective of why and how we work toward these sustainable goals, using examples of three commercial projects: two that meet the goal and one that comes close. The desires of the client, code requirements, budget considerations, and other constraints all drive us closer and further from these goals. Hear the lessons learned (both good and bad) on a new school, a church addition, and a new Buddhist center and learn to apply these lessons to future projects. With time for Q&A.

Peter Ewers, AIA has been focused on sustainable design prior to founding Ewers Architecture in 1998. The 16th Street Mall: The History, Purpose, Innovations, and Challenges Working on the Backbone “Main Street” of Denver’s Downtown Core

GENERATE – The presentation will highlight how the project balanced the need to respect and incorporate historic preservation objectives with the requirement to create a resilient and future looking city center capable of supporting infrastructure demands and public realm placemaking of a growing metropolis. We’ll explore the “hidden in plain sight” advancements that allow the public space to evolve with everchanging needs of the city both in function and in technology. We will highlight the challenges of navigating local, state, federal stakeholders, addressing conflicting federal regulations, and how the project incorporated innovative technologies to solve complex problems.

REGENERATE – A Discussion of what lies ahead for the City of Denver, the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP), the background of what initiated one of the largest urban regenerative projects for the City of Denver and the anticipated outcome of this substantial project.
