It was a grand family reunion!
The two AIA mega peer groups got together for the first time ever. The Big Sibs are 20 local chapters representing 40,000 members and the Large States are 13 state chapters representing 55,000 members. These colossal components continue to lead the profession and shape the practice of architecture. As host and the only chapter in both groups, AIA Colorado was thrilled to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Large States meeting here in 1994.
Denver is on a mission to be the “Capital of the new American West” and has vibrant architecture and a growing economy as proof of its intentions. But challenges are also evident in the form of housing unaffordability and strained infrastructure. We enjoyed interacting with colleagues from around the country as we immersed ourselves in the community and learned from each other.

the world’s first carbon positive hotel
You’ll be one of the first guests to stay in the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States as the hotel will be your hub for lodging and breakfast. Designed by nationally renowned architecture firm Studio Gang, this brand-new building welcomes us as one of their very first groups and they couldn’t be prouder. With sweeping vistas, a one of a find façade and innovative moves to be seen throughout, Populus is sure to become a design icon.
Located in downtown Denver at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and 14th Street, Populus puts you moments from Civic Center Park, 16th Street Mall, and the Museum and Performing Arts Districts. Downtown Denver caters to those who live a dynamic lifestyle, seamlessly blending urban excitement with natural beauty. When you’re ready for outdoor adventures, the nearby parks, trails, and majestic Rocky Mountains await, providing endless opportunities for exploration and recreation.
McNichols Civic Center Building
From the very latest of our day to the best of the City Beautiful movement, we will meet at the McNichols building across the street from the hotel. This was the first building constructed for the Civic Center Plaza, a vision inspired by the Court of Honor at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. You will be in the heart of the city and where Denver endeavored to put itself on the map as a great place.
