Modern In Denver
William Logan, publisher
William Logan and his publication, Modern in Denver, have touched countless peopleโfrom the City of Denver to the state of Colorado and beyond.
As a non-architect, William has become a true champion of elevated design. He is passionate and cares deeply about its value. He recognizes the positive influence design has on peopleโs lives and how this force creates a tangible, concrete impact on our world.
I first met William through a mutual friend when he was contemplating starting Modern in Denver. At the time, I had just completed a modular prefab LEED Pilot residence in the Highlands. I found William curious and full of the kind of good energy required to realize such an ambitious endeavor: becoming a leader in our design community.
He approaches every story with playfulness and humor, but it is his tenacity that has given Modern in Denver such a profound impact on our communityโnot to mention his remarkable graphic design sensibility.
The Modern in Denver teamโincluding William, editor Vanessa Kauffman Zimmerly, and advertising and operations director Daniel Burnsโembraces diverse, curated topics spanning culture, planning, landscape, and architecture, not only in Denver but regionally and globally as well. They are deeply committed to the community, as evidenced by events such as Design Week and Design in Bloom. They also create opportunities for discourse through op-eds, design conversations, and artist exposรฉs.
Most of all, William andย Modern in Denverย educate people on how we, as a culture, can do betterโ
why good design makes a difference, why coming together to celebrate our passions and connect
is ultimately what matters most.
Congratulations, William and Modern in Denver, on this distinct recognition!

2025 25-Year Award โข Tryba Architects
Congratulations to 2025 25-Year Award recipient
Tryba Architects
The Award
This award showcases buildings that set a precedent and stand the test of time. Recognizing a built structure that has catalyzed, reimagined, and advanced communities in Colorado, enhancing the publicโs appreciation and beneficial use of architecture. These honorees continue to set standards of design excellence and architectural significance. Eligible nominations must be: located in Colorado, built at least 25 years prior to the date of submittal, and still in active use.
Presented by Andy Rockmore, AIA
Principal, SAR+
2025 AIA Colorado President-Elect.

The Architect’s Studio by Tryba Architects
Located in the North Capitol Hill neighborhood, the project reflects the remarkable transformation of a historic residence into both a family home and a thriving design studio. Originally built in 1895 by master architect Frank Edbrookeโknown for Denver landmarks like the Brown Palace Hotelโthe neoclassical home fell into decline over the decades.
In 1998, David and Stephanie Tryba restored the residence and adaptively reused the adjacent ballroom as the firmโs studio. The result is a striking blend of historic character and modern design, with light-filled workspaces, a library, gallery, and restored gardens.
For 25 years, the Architectโs Studio has been more than a workplace. It has served as a catalyst for revitalization in a once-neglected neighborhood, bridging downtown Denver with surrounding communities, and influencing the cityโs growth through historic preservation, adaptive reuse, and sustainable infill development.
On behalf of AIA Colorado, we are proud to present the 2025 Twenty-Five Year Award to The Architectโs Studio by Tryba Architects.
Congratulations!

The annual AIA Colorado Awards honor the outstanding work of members and their firms, reinforce the value of great architecture, and highlight member contributions to positive change.

Colorado Model Low Energy and Carbon Code
The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) recently announced that the Colorado Energy Code Board has published its Model Low Energy and Carbon Code. These new guidelines will increase flexibility for builders by providing multiple options to achieve efficiency by removing mandatory on-site renewable energy requirements for commercial buildings and making renewable energy voluntary. At the same time, the code will, for the first time, fairly credit energy savings from high-efficiency electric heating and water heating. This means that while the code changes do not make it more difficult to build with gas, in many circumstances high-efficiency electric heating and water heating will be the most cost-effective option. Learn more about the new code here. Register for informational webinars on the new code here.

The session emphasized how thoughtful contract language can help align agreements with firm goals, avoid over promising, and mitigate liability while setting projects up for success.
In addition to technical knowledge, scholars explored the interpersonal side of contract work, learning how to identify key players in negotiations, apply effective communication strategies, and approach difficult conversations around scope changes, additional services, and disputes. Exercises and case studies underscored the value of clear, proactive dialogue and strategic decision making. Scholars left with actionable tools for contract evaluation and negotiation, reinforcing that successful practice requires both legal clarity and strong client relationships.

One lecture addressed the personal and professional considerations involved in launching an independent practice, offering candid insights into the challenges, mindset shifts, and key steps in starting a firm. The other focused on alternative business models, highlighting how firms are rethinking traditional structures to adapt to shifting industry demands.
During the guided tour of a local project, participants examined how business development strategies directly influence design, delivery methods, and client engagement. The session concluded with a panel
of leaders from architecture and engineering firms of various sizes, who shared practical strategies for scaling operations, navigating risk, and integrating innovation into business practices. Attendees left with a broadened understanding of entrepreneurial thinking and tools to apply these concepts in their own careers.
Key Takeaways
- Business development is built on relationships. Small, genuine moments and consistent follow-up often leave a stronger impression than any formal pitch.
- There is no single path to entrepreneurship. Career growth comes from self-awareness, taking risks, and being open to learning through experience.
- Collaboration can be a competitive advantage. Strategic partnerships can strengthen proposals, broaden expertise, and help win complex projects.
- Design and business strategy are closely connected. Project delivery, user experience, and client engagement should inform design decisions from the start.
- Adaptability is key to long-term success. Embracing changeโ whether in roles, firm structures, or client expectationsโleads to resilience and growth.
- Invest in people, including yourself. Emotional intelligence, mentorship, and personal development are essential for leadership and lasting impact.

Session Description
Session 6 explored sustainability, material innovation, and cultural engagement in architecture through a series of interconnected discussions and experiences. The first session was a panelist discussion, where experts from architecture, engineering, policy, and academia examined how interdisciplinary collaboration and traditional ecological wisdom shape low-carbon, high-impact solutions in the built environment. Topics included carbon-sequestering materials like Carbon Core bricks, Denverโs electrification goals, and the challenges of client education. The second session focused on carbon storage strategies, disassembly-friendly design, and the importance of environmental product declarations in material selection. Together, these sessions emphasized the convergence of research, policy, and design in building healthier, more resilient, and equitable communities.
Before the final session, we toured the Denver Water campus, gaining firsthand insight into how sustainability was embedded in its development. The tour showcased water reuse systems, energy-efficient design, and systemic strategies that reflect civic responsibility and environmental stewardship. The day concluded with a session centered on tribal engagement in the Fishers Peak State Park project, where participants explored Indigenous sustainability practices, traditional building methods, and the importance of early and respectful consultation with tribal communities. The conversation highlighted the need for policy adaptation, cultural sensitivity, and long-term relationship-building to support inclusive and sustainable land stewardship.
Key Takeaways
- Architects, engineers, policymakers, and researchers must work together to move sustainable innovations from concept to implementation.
- Academic innovations often stall before reaching industry; stronger faculty-industry partnerships are needed to bridge this divide.
- Sustainability depends on selecting materials with clear environmental product declarations, availability, and cost-effectiveness.
- The campus demonstrated integrated systems for water reuse, energy efficiency, and public health in civic architecture.
- Onsite sessions built trust with tribal participants, showing the value of co-creation and responsive engagement.
